Exercise
Staying active and enjoying your favorite activities at every stage of your transplant experience can help both physically and emotionally. Along with eating healthy meals throughout the day and taking your medications, exercising regularly can go a long way in keeping you and your organ healthy.
Whether you choose aerobic exercise or weight training, exercise brings lots of benefits to you and your new organ. There are a number of simple steps you can take to get aerobic exercise on a daily basis. For instance, you may go dancing with friends, take the stairs instead of the elevator, or ride a bicycle or walk to a friend’s house or the store instead of driving.
You may have heard from your doctor or transplant coordinator that anti-rejection medications can put you at risk for developing weak bones, a disease called osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise will help prevent osteoporosis as well as help your heart and your weight. Weight-bearing exercise like walking, jogging, hiking, climbing stairs, or dancing is important for keeping your bones healthy.
Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting or changing your exercise routine.
