The Impact of Transplantation
A patient coming out of an organ transplant procedure will, in many ways, soon return to normal. But in other ways, the changes are long lasting.

As the caregiver, it’s important that you understand your role—and know that change takes time. Typically, a caregiver will be responsible for duties such as:

  • Helping your loved one understand and start a medication schedule
  • Watching over basic health
  • Communicating with the transplant team
  • Meeting your loved one’s basic living needs, like food, cleanliness, and mobility around the house
  • Driving him or her to and from clinic appointments

Remember, there will be good days and bad days. However, through open communication with your loved one and an understanding that you’re not alone, you can be the most important part of your loved one’s “new” life.
